Someone posted a copy of a lecture that his dad had given a number of times on the subject of finishing wood.

Its brief and well worth reading.

The most profound thing he said is "The best advice I can offer is to READ THE CAN"

Yeah - I probably need to do that. The label on the can often contains a lot of really useful information.

Another item overlooked by some newer woodworkers (and maybe a few old ones too) is that the Finish is what presents the object. I have overlooked this stage and I have seen this often enough - spend 20 to 40 hours making something and spend 2 hours finishing! Then I learned that a sloppy or quick finish distorts the beauty of the wood and object I just made.

I have learned that something worthwhile in making should have at least half that many hours in the finish. The time and hours spent in finishing the project make it radiate, whether lacquer, poly, oil etc. Time taken in the finish stage is well worth it - the sanding, the first coat, the next few coats with sanding in between and the final coating, carefully applied.
