I am in Dallas this weekend supervising yet another move by my 25 yr
old college graduate accountant daughter. Will this be the last
move? Oh well, on with my story. On Emily's desk was a redoak burl
euro made by me. It was one of the first 17 pens I made one cold
bleek November for Christmas presents. After those 17 initial pens I
was hooked. And this pen made me think, "Could I have possibly made
this pen?" Friction polish...Hut Crystal Coat...Now, the reason I
switched to CA for my finish of choice is apparent. I know that pen
has been on Emily's desk for the last 3 years and it looked really
bad, especially when I sat my afzelia FP, with its nice shinny deep
CA finish, on the desk top next to it. Yep! the reason I stopped
using friction polish was now quite apparent. And, I thought I had
that friction polishing down pat...multiple coats....lots of
heat/friction...nice and shinny for the moment.

"But the pen I've been carrying for two years now looks as good as
it did when I first made it", I've heard many of you say. I just
can't believe it. Not now, after seeing what I just saw
tonight...side by side...on Emily's desk top.

I type type this as food for thought. I too once considered friction
polish the ultimate finish. I don't intend to step on anyone's toes
and any similarity to a real person is simply coincidence.

That does it! NO more friction polish. LOL[;)][:D]
I think many of us needed to read that, although its cheap and easy to apply, it pays in the long run to upgrade your finish.
Thanks Don![:D]

Don,

I could not agree with you more. I actually took back some of my early pens from customers and friends to re-do the friction non-polish. Of course it may mean I have no idea how to do friction polish, but I'm with you on this one.

I gave a padauk pen finished with hut ppp to a mechanic friend of mine over 5 years ago... a few months ago I visited his shop, where it has been on his desk the entire time - he uses it every day as his 'regular use' pen. His hands are continually covered in grease, grit, dirt, rust - you name it. Anyways, the pen still looks great - the polish is not glossy, but that's because it was never intended to be overly glossy, but otherwise has held up magnificently, and the wax doesn't chip off or peel like shellac would.

Why does everyone equate friction polish with crystal coat?

Because they are? Educate us. From what I have learned, HUT Crystal Coat, Myland's High Build, and Shellawax are all friction polishes. I've tried 'em all and none produce the results for which I am looking. I have no problem with the use of these products. If they give the results for which one is looking then use them. But not me. Not the HUT PPP sticks either. Nor carnauba wax. Or beeswax. Or Ren wax....But TSW is great. sorry! CA ROCKS!

Thanks, Don. BTW, for those of you who might want a bit more protection over your friction polish, give TSW a try. Easy to apply, wears well, UV protection. Available from Pens of Color, Arizona Silhouette and woodpens.com.

I even think it has some what of a build up quality that seems to fill in the fine sanding marks that even MM leaves and makes he pen look even better. Correct or not.? That's what I tthink and have observed.

It is definitely a build-type product. I've got a friend who is working on taking some ultra-high res pictures for me which will show the before and after effect of TSW. I'll post them when he gets the shots taken.

I love the finished lood CA gives a pen. I saw a pen i gave to a co-worker and the finish was coming off in patches. I had to take it back and am trying to fix the finish with lacquer. Did I do something wrong with the CA how many coats do you put on and do you use thick of thin? Thanks for the pointers.
