Well, I had this chunk of wood.....mystery wood that looked like it belonged in the fireplace. It had knots and cracks and didn't appear to have much of a future. I decided to turn it and see if there was anything salvageable or if it would simply end up as chips on the floor.
The result is a small flared dish about 6" diameter. Since there were knots and mixed grain, I thought there was a chance for some beauty inside waiting for me to release it. Turns out, the grain is okay but sort of cloudy/murky as if some spalt had begun but not enough to make it special.
Final thoughts: I'm not thrilled with the form or grain pattern but it is a completed turning and is okay. Another lesson in trying to make something that is the size of what you started with.
Perhaps this would have been better as a sphere or a hollow form.
Again, Howard Feed & Wax, buffed with a clean wheel.
