Finally got around to playing with a few ideas.

Any feedback on either the thin black veneers or the thicker ones? I'm not seeing a preference in-person. Also, these are just to see if the design works - they will not become pens as the alignment is not good. However, I like the basic idea of the added veneers to the slotted trimring. Now I can play with different color combinations.

And the funky chevron was also a concept try. Many flaws, but it was a challenge to get the pairing of the slotted blank, inlays, and partial green veneers. This was a return to my interest in Frank Lloyd Wright's stained glass concepts.

You guys make me jealous with your awesome segmenting skills. I plan to try my hand at it as soon as I can figure out how to drill a hole that comes out the far end of the blank on center.

I think they look awesome! I think using both black veneers as you did looks great! Are you still making those billet trim rings/blanks on a cue lathe? I have been following one of your forum threads from 2017 while working through figuring out a way to make them.

I have recently been working on them with Wmcullen utilizing his 3D printed jig parts to come up with a method to cut out the kerf on the router table. Getting pretty close with a jig that gives repeatable and relatively precise cuts using a 3/32 router bit.

LOL. I turn mine round first, then use a collet chuck.

Actually a 1950's Atlas Clausing metal lathe that lost it's motor - only purpose in life is to hold the billets.

I had always intended to add complimentary rings on either side of the slotted rings, but life got busy.

Glad to see you back segmenting. They all work for me. The dual thicker black veneer, looks good, but they will need to be very close in thickness to look right, as yours do. The thick black veneer on just the ends looks good to, but they do look like thinner end caps. They would look very nice on a double barrel pen that has some band/feature in the center. On the chevron pen, I think I might prefer the green lines on the outside a little better than just the middle band. All are pretty nice though, colors work very well together.

It's fun to play again. The Chevron one can be tweaked, but I'm not sure I like it enough to re-visit it. But it kept me out of trouble for a few days.

These final results are, in my opinion, amazing. And the construction photos break everything down into exciting and understandable steps. But the thing I appreciate most is your self-critique as to why these don't measure up to your personal standards. Again, from my point of view, they're stunning, but the critique is valuable to read. You are a fantastic teacher.

After all the time to construct the blanks... the omission of a simple pencil time was my mea culpa!

Here are two from late yesterday that passed the test!
