Here are a few EDCs I turned out. Some are long using the extender on the refill. I prefer making them shorter without the refill extender, better carry size and your customer won't toss out the refill with the extender on it, rendering the pen useless!
Woods are black palm, bocote, and wendge with a Matt CA finish. Some plastic & ebonite. Encompassing a Medford Infraction 😃
Of all the finishes to this pen I think the stainless and aluminum bronze to be the best. JMO of course. Thanks for the look.

Anthony, I'm seeing different numbers for the modified tube length WITHOUT the extender.
Start tube length is 2.769"
extender is .495" effective length (with nib end inserted into the top of the refill)
Subtract the .495" from 2.769 = 2.274" reduced tube length

This would put the reduced finished length at 4.88" with refill retracted (5.381" in original length)

As far as the kit finishes, am I correct that there is only ONE of the Stainless kits in your photo, with the black/white fleck barrel, between the aluminum pen, and the aluminum bronze?

Also can you check the weight in grams? - the Stainless kit is heavier than the Aluminum by a noticeable amount according to the specs.
 
The biggest problem I have with this kit and a few others is the added "extender" piece needed to make it work. You can take it to the bank that whomever you sell one of these to, they are going to loose the "extender" and will most probably look to you to replace it. I can't remember the kit but about 10 years back this kit required some similar but smaller type device to get it to work with gel refills, and everyone I sold, I got back because buyer lost the gizmo.
 
Hi Bruce, your math is correct in your measurements. However I chose to error on the long side to make sure the refill when retracted goes all the way up in the pen as not to mark up your shirt in case its a little short. The smallest I made the finished barrel is 2.900, I'm sure you could go a little shorter and still have a good pen.

Correct on picking the stainless steel pen. I like the little duller finish and the extra weight. As some people will judge perceived value on weight. Not sure why, but they do. The natural aluminum just seems to shinny. I will let you know on the weights when I weigh them.

DrD, so true on the extension. You can tell your customer to keep the extension when they change the refill, but they will forget before they even get out the door! I think that pen was a click Sierra with the extension years ago.

Exactly why I won't make these to sell. I bought the starter set, but decided the extended will be a problem, and to prove that to myself, I promptly lost one of them !!
