I wouldn't post this here, but it IS the Casual Conversation forum!

I have mentioned here before that I also enjoy knives. I have an ongoing affection (affliction?) for Kershaw assisted opening knives such as the Leek. Other companies have some assisted opening knives, but I have not appreciated their efforts so far.

Then a few weeks ago Buy.com started occasionally including SOG knives in their daily specials. I finally found one that caught my attention, an M46D Meridian, and I ordered it. I got it in the mail yesterday, and I can now report that I am impressed with this knife.

This is an assisted opening knife that is much chunkier than the sleek and trim Kershaw leek. But I suspect that in use it will be easier to hold than the Leek. It has a funky cut-out handle spelling "SOG" in open letters that go all the way through the handle (it almost looks like "DOS" on the other side). The assisted opening uses a "kick" pretty much the same as a Leek, but it is a really zippy assisted opening! Where the Leek flicks open, the SOG seems to accelerate through it's arc, snapping to the open position. Of course they use different spring mechanics, but it is interesting how much faster the SOG seems. Closing the blade also seems to present more resistance with that spring, but it's not bad.

This is a funky, interesting knife, and I think I will enjoy it. It seems to be well made with good quality materials, with AUS 8 Stainless Steel for the blade and a layered aluminum and Zytel handle. I only wish it wasn't partially serrated, as my tastes do not run to serrations, but it's not a big deal either.

Just thought I'd pass this along to other knife psychos like me. Here's a link to the Buy.com page showing the knife:

I bought a SOG Twitch a while back and MUCH prefer the Kershaw Scallion. It is smoother and they last better. My Twitch spring mechanism kept coming loose and finally fell apart. When it did, the spring was lost to never land! It is now a shop kife that does not get closed!

SOG does have a lifetime warranty. When I had a problem also with a twitch (screw came out of the pocket clip) They asked if I wanted to send the knife or they could send me the parts. Of course I do live near the factory. I like their multi plier best and I have owned just about every one that has been made.

I personally dont think there is a match for Ken onions torsion bar mechanism. I used to sell knives and one thing I noticed was for the money, you really cant beat Kershaw.

I'm with you! I'm not going to be turning my back on Kershaw anytime soon. The SOG is a passing fancy, and was nice enough to write about, but I still have a thing for the leek. My latest leek is the black damascus - very nice! I keep a Scallion and a 1680 Segal special in my desk at work (to open packages, of course!). I'd still like to find a 1660 ti/zdp for less than an arm and a leg!

My everyday carry knife is a Kershaw - Ken Orion #1560ST. I think it gets more use than my pen.. lol. Assisted opening is extremely handy when you need one handed opening capabilities.

Now if they would bring the price down like that for the tanto blade I would be happy. I usually carry a Buck 110Auto everyday but when I was on duty I always carried a handmade fighter made by Bill Cheatham,It's a great knife that is very well made.

I loved my Kershaw scallion. I lost at airport security, forgetting it was in my bag, and I had no time to mail it. I also have a Kershaw Whirlwind, but it's a little big for everyday carrying. Best two knives I've ever had.

kershaw is great, but SOG isn't really on my wish-list, only had a couple of their folders and didn't care for them.
if you want a fantastic assisted opener, try the Camilus HEAT.
I love the drop-point design and its my personal carry knife, great balance and erganomic grip. i carry the larger size. they were bought out awhile ago i think and since then i believe another company bought the name or something and started producing the same knife except with an aluminum grip i believe instead of the polycarbawhatever stuff. I prefer the old ones though as the new ones feel a bit lighter in the grip with the aluminum, which i don't like, but its still a great knife. not everyone has heard of these but i garantee you they rock. i think if you shop around you can get a newer one for around $40-$55.
