Never worked with soapstone before, does it turn like regular wood/acrylic blanks? Any special tools / polish needed? Any special safety concerns?

No it dose NOT turn like wood or acrylic! Face sheild and excellent respritory protection are a MUST!!! Be ready to find dust for the next year in places you never thought it possible to get dust in. It will take a really nice polish and it can be turned with standard wood wotrking gear but the dust is nasty stuff! Very nasty!

Dont you have a local rock shop Jim? Soapstone is a staple at any rock shop and often it can be had cheaper than shipping it. Also the quality of soap stone veries wildly! Some is just beautiflu stuff, some is so full of fracture lines you can barely get accent rings outa it.

no, where i live theres not even an arts and craft store around. Your right about the stone, i just finished a little trinket box out of some India Soapstone, it turned real nice, i'll post a picture of it when i get time later this week. I'll try the link you posted thanks for that. To anyone that has not tried turning soapstone i would suggest trying it at least once, i love working with it but you do need good dust protection.

Thanks again,
Jim
