I have been obsessed with trying to make tops with longer spin times and bought some soapstone with the thought that it would be heavier and may be good for a longer spinning top. After I got it, I decided to make a pen. The soapstone is much softer than I expected and I ended up going with a kit with a heavier wall thickness. Here is my end result after a little experimentation. Fly Fishing pen kit.

Excellent choice all the way around. Looks Great!

I have thought about making a soapstone pen many times, but just have not ordered any soapstone.

Very interesting and inspiring result !!

Thanks for showing !!

Gonna hafta try some soapstone now !!

Wonderful looking pen. Soapstone is on my list as well.
Did you soak it with CA glue before turning? I thought it might be necessary to keep it from shattering.

I did not soak it. I did not have any issues turning it, however, pressing in parts in thin walled kits was an issue. Soaking with thin CA may have helped with that.

Hubert here. Just did a soapstone for the first time. Very soft! Don't really like working with it BUT - you will be interested to hear - the scraper worked really well.
