I said "Dad, your shop is rebuilt. You have a new A/C unit. You have your radio. You have freshly epoxied floors and all of your tool tops are now rust free and well oiled. Time to say thank you for my hard work, make me something"

So he made this as a warm up, to get back in the woodworking groove. It's his own take on a knife block for me to display my letter openers.

Maple top and bottom, dark oak for the sides and almost 1,000 bamboo skewers. I told him to just use scrap wood for the first one. After making this one, he just said "....I can do better, I got an idea". And viola! The lightbulb re-lit.

Questions/comments always welcomed.

nice, did he turn all those little sticks?

Haha. He's not a turner.....not yet at least.

He actually told me "With all that scrap wood you have, you might get a better sense of accomplishment if you turned these instead of me buying them." I just handed him a cigar and rolled my eyes.

Wow! I like it so much. Cool and creative use of the bamboo skewers and love the wood combination. Your letter openers have very attractive handles. Great job to you and your Dad!

I think the bulb is re lit and burning brightly. Very unique display. I can't imagine drilling the holes to hold those skewers. How are held in alignment or are they just packed in there tight. Either way is beautiful and unique. Can't wait to see his better idea.

Thanks guys. My dad and I actually work in the same office building, so he's seen most of your comments. The skewers are just packed in there. We talked about gluing them, but if you add letter openers, it'll be too tight and if you only have a few left, they might fall through. Leaving them loose, to pack in as needed on the fly seemed like the best idea.

His new idea, apparently involved him breaking into my workshop, taking a decent slab of maple burl I had and leaving a post it saying "you'll thank me later".

I told him I need a unique bottle stopper display next, I think he's going to ignore me and his own route. That's cool with me, the old man is happy and back at it.
