Hey there all... was thinking about funding a app for turners and/or woodworking for smart phones.

Wondered what you all thought about it.

Generally speaking it would be more of an information based tool putting a lot of the information we already have/know all in one spot.

Kit specs
Bushings / drill requirements
vendors who sell which parts
Inventory tool
Maybe a space to log custom orders or ideas
Place to post to a group about leads on product sources

Other ideas? Or not enough for our industry?

You just described this forum other than the inventory and there are plenty of apps for that. And members that choice to use their phones, use an app called forum runner if I remember, so why not just use the real thing! Or even a Google search for information. A number of apps I have seen for trades, electrical, welding or anything else deal with codes or some aspect of the information that needs to be carried in book form.

Wood turning isn't something that you are going to be doing away from the shop! The younger crowd may find it of interest, but the vendors and some of the addies change so much that even link section become quickly outdated.

Being an older owner/user of a stupid phone they aren't that smart! I don't use may of the apps that are already out there. Screen is to small to enjoy surfing the web, with out a lot of finger shuffling. If you have the fonts large enough to read and see photo's easily.

I for one wouldn't use or buy an app, I have tried a number of of them that harassed one with pop up ads that as fast as you close one another would pop up that the app was just about useless.

The other thing I have noticed is that as soon as an app is out there shortly somebody comes up with a free app of the same type.

Travis,

I've been looking for someone to develop an app for smart phones using a database. The hope would be that anyone could use a runtime license of the database for no charge. I am willing to purchase a license if it were easy enough to develop the DB. I want a DB that would allow images to be included also. There are quite a few DBs out there but I'm not willing to invest in an app unless I know it would work. I was hoping to develop a Filemaker Pro version that could be at least web based query. So far this is on hold. My intention is to update my pen tube and bushings located in the library. Btw you could download my PDF version to your phone as I have, but it is difficult to view. Any help would be graciously accepted!
