When its 90 degrees plus in Wisconsin, the local newspaper creates articles about idiots in the sun (my opinion). I happened to be one of the idiots in question, this time.
At 3:00, after most of the exhibitors had left, always a sign of a good show when the exhibitors clear out 2 hours early. Anyway, at 3:00 two ladies entered my booth looking for Ed. (uh-oh, I'm in trouble again!!) They announce they are from the Kenosha Museum art society (or words to that effect). Sheepishly, I admit to being the guy they are looking for (and prepare to be arrested, at least).
This lady knows how to start a conversation!!! She hands me a check and holds forth a red ribbon announcing that I have been awarded second place in the "craft" division judging. Stunned, I reply something on the order of "They were JUDGING in this show!???!!" I now realize that was not inspired, but Dawn makes out all the entries and I pay no attention to the shows. For this one, I was GOING to make new backdrops-I'm tired of my tall black shelves. However, it was over 90 on Saturday and I have to move my saw onto the driveway to work on backdrops-WELL, at 90 degrees, that just AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN! So, off the WalMart we went (for plants for Dawn's plant-holders).
There I saw the most attractive little shelving unit. Made by that distinguished furniture-maker Rubbermaid!!! So, after Dawn barfed on my new idea, I purchased TWO of them (budget was $20, so why not get TWO $10 shelves). THESE were gloriously decorated (by Dawn) at the show with some material and a silver starry material!!! They were just gorgeous (in a Wal-Mart kinda way).
Realize that, in order to get second place, these judges decided MY booth and products looked BETTER than Dawn's (a booth we have meticulously perfected over the past decade).
So, I am grateful and honored-but I believe this proves "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Sometimes the beholder (Judge) can reflect that famous saying, "The judge (justice) is blind!!!"
So, if you leave your next show WITHOUT a ribbon, trust me, it does NOT mean YOU did not DESERVE it. Cause I left with the one YOU deserved!!!
