I recently "inherited" a large number of regular old 7mm slimline-type kits. Usually I prefer working with higher-end kits, but I want to use these to play around with trying out some segmented blanks and other crazy ideas that might not work.

They come with these Cross C1-type refills that are just... wretchedly bad. Dry, skippy, rough. Anyone have a recommendation for a compatible refill that is smoother and wetter or bolder? Rollerball or gel even? I can't seem to find much Googling around other than people saying "well the Monteverde Parker style refills are pretty good, maybe their Cross style refills are good too."

I can find stuff like this on Amazon that might be a step up, but I figured someone here has encountered this problem before and would have some firsthand experience I could trust.

If those are old refills, chances are they are dried out. My father had a business with give-away pens. The old ones did exactly what yours did. Go to an office supply and get a few new ones.
For Slimline pens, I recommend: Turning Modified Slimline Pens by Don Ward.

Great recommendation - I live very close to Craft Supplies USA, and it looks like that have that book in stock. I'll check it out.

Sounds like those are the ones to try then if I got a testimonial. Thanks for the pointer!

I've bought the Unibene Parker style refills and have been quite satisfied with them, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Cross style are also pretty nice.
