Someone please tell me ....

What is the distinguishing feature/characteristic of Silver and Deming bits ?

Thanks

Bits larger than 1/2 inch, with reduced shanks. The bits have 3 flutes, and are 3 inches long with 3-inch shanks. Typical SAE S&D bits run from 33/64 to 1-1/2 inches.

EDIT: I just found out that in Canada they're called Prentice Drills.

Thanks .... but the above pictured bits appear to have only 2 flutes each.

Do the fractional sizes come in increments of 1/64" ?

Yep, 2 flutes on these metric imports. I hadn't noticed. Thanks for pointing it out.

Fractional sizes are available in 1/64 increments. Check out the Norseman website for some good info about their S&D bits. High quality, but pricy...

It seems to me that over the years the 'brand name' has gone south. All of the good Silver & Deming bits I remember were a gold and black 2-tone. Not these.
Any if they are such great bits, why put then in a rice paper box?
I mean really, $2.75 per bit?
I recently paid $19 for a singe 12.5 bit.

$2.75 per bit is the reason I ordered a set. They should be OK for wood and plastic, and I have a Drill Doctor for sharpening. If I were working with steel I'd order a higher quality set.

These don't appear to be high quality, but with sharpening could be made better.

One improvement would be to file a small flat on the face of the flute ie parallel to the axis of the bit. This will reduce the tendency of the bit to "grab".

The Drill Doctor will not sharpen drills larger than 3/4" (~19mm), but there are bit sharpeners that will.
