Sierra + Snake Skin = :(

So I tried my first cast (a sierra snake skin) and it turned out pretty good (thanks IAP Library). My problem was when I turned the blank I hit the skin even before sanding down to the bushings:frown:. I know that there isn't a lot of extra meat on a sierra so I am guessing that I need to wrap the skin tighter around the tube somehow or not do any overlap?

Check Woodcraft. They sell a Wall Street III pen that has a larger OD than the Sierra. This is the same pen used for their circuit board pens, so it might work for your snake skin problem.

The thickness of the skin is important. I make a few snake skin pens with blanks I make myself. I overlap the seam, use the sierra kit (not the sierra vista) and have no problem. Tight wrapping, roll the skin tight against the tube and use skins that are as thin as you can find. If you tan your own skins be sure to scrape all of the flesh from the skin. Good luck.

The wallstreet III, or more commonly the sierra vistal is one solution and cheaper if you don;t purchase it from Woodcraft.

The thickness of the skin is also another factor. I make a few snake skin pens using blanks I make myself. I use the sierra, not the sierra vista, overlap the seam, and have no problems. Wrap the skin tightly then roll it under your hand to press the skin good and tight against the tube. If you tan your own skins be sure to scrape all of the flesh from the skin prior to tanning.
