Just recently my lathe has started makeing a RRRAAARRR RRRAAARRRR sond if you know what i mean. I ran it with just the headstock with nothing attached and it still made the noise. Then i loosened the drive belt and it made more of a humming sound but louder that it had been. It is a delta midi lathe by the way. Then I think I found the problem. As i was running it I put my hand on the hand crank silvery part not sure what it is called but I could feel a little bumb as it ran. Not sure how it happened but I think it is out of round or something. Does anyone know if it can be fixed and how hard it might be.
Thanks for the help.

Could be the bearings, but one other thing to check if your machine has a Reeves speed control... I have a Jet 1442 that's a Reeves and I got some noise in mine... upon checking I found that the set screw on the motor pulley had loosened and the pulley was pushed against the motor housing by the spring... made a grinding noise as it turned....

No It doesn't have a reverse or variable speed just a plane jane lathe. Thanks for the help. Does anyone know of a link or site that could tell me how to do the repairs and where to get the parts. Thanks again everyone. I knew I could count on you guys.

As Chuck mentioned, even though you don't have a Reeves drive, it could still be a loose pulley on your spindle, and if loose enough, might be rubbing against the headstock housing --- loosen the setscrew so it moves easily, slide the pulley so it lines up with your motor pulley, then tighten the set screw. Otherwise, I agree with the others -- check your bearings.

Here's a parts diagram and list:

I'm thinking I might have to order the bearing. If I am looking at the chart right I only need one and a little instruction on how to get the old one out and the new one in. I loosened the pulley and tried it in a different spot and tried it tight and lose. It sounds better when the pulley is a little lose but it still makes more noise than before.

Thanks again.. Paul

Paul there are two bearings on the spindle. change both of them at the same time. you will not be disapointed. changing one will only mean you will be changing the other one fairly soon. :glasses-cool::glasses-cool:

Sweet. thanks for the help I will order two bearings and save myself some future trouble. Does anyone know where I can get instructions for the non mechanical. I always seem to have extra parts when I fix something.

Paul,
Look up your lathe on the internet... there should be a button on the lathe description page that says "manual", "owners manual" or similar wording... I keep a copy of the manuals for all of my tools on my computer so I can pull them up anytime I need to.... usually there will be instructions on changing the bearings in the manual. At least I found them for my Jet in the manual.

It's a relatively easy fix... as mechanically uninclined as I am, I was able to change the bearings in both of my lathes.
