The lowest speed on the Griz is 600 rpm and that, IMHO, is far too high. It would save your sanity in the long run, to purchase a lathe that gave you more control and safety. The purchase of a better lathe would be an investment in your future and you could make much nicer gifts for TLOYL, In-Laws, Family, Friends, etc.

You should read reviews on that Grizzly G0462 before buying that lathe.

If want an alternative to Jet 1642 & and have 220 outlet take a look at Rikon's 1642.

That Grizzly isn't even close to the Jet. I have the 1642 and it's everything I hoped for and then some. In fact, the runout is better than my metal lathe. My metal lathe is about .0005" and the Jet BARELY even moves the dial, probably around .0002", that's pretty darn good for a wood lathe!

And where is the handwheel on that Griz? I can't even imagine not having a handwheel!

They're trying to trick you by having a tach on it, it's not variable speed like the 1642.

It looks really LIGHTWEIGHT to me, the Jet is alot beefier.

To me it's no contest, get the Jet if you can afford it.

I would also recommend a Nova 1624-44 over that Grizzly also go on sale couple times a year. They also sell reconditioned versions little cheaper but would be careful doing that. Man over at woodnet bought one had issues and trouble getting e-mail help from the place and Teknatool. Guess he got his lathe and no one at the recon place on weekends. I am sure been taken care of by now.
