Shop Fox wall mount DC... Why did I wait so long??

I've been turning pens for about 9 months now and getting by with a large shop vac to clean up the resulting mess after turning each pen. I finally decided to get a Dust Collector.

I wound up buying the Shop Fox 1hp wall mount from Amazon Prime. $237 and it was on my porch two days later.

I also bought a $9 remote control to turn the unit on/off since I'd be mounting it up high in my shop with 9' ceilings.

Lastly, I bought Rockler 21' dust right hose, floor sweep, and bench nozzle and collection ports for my lathe, bandsaw, and table saw.

It all went together very easily and man what an improvement. I just turned 6 blanks and it only took about 30 seconds for cleanup when I was done. The Rockler lathe hood I bought works great along with the stand I fabricated using rare earth magnets. Here's some pics:

Here is the dust hood mount I made after seeing a similar design in the IAP library. I used rare earth magnets from Rockler and wow are they strong. I may change this mount to only have one leg to allow more room for banjo adjustment.

My DC looks identical to yours except that mine has the Rockler name on it. I think it cost a couple of $ more when I bought. I use it on all my machines that have a 4" dust port. I got the Rockler small acc. fittings & hose pack for my smaller machines such as sanders and small band saw. The acc. hose fits my Fein vac with the added man/auto receptacle for the machine power. I have a small shop or I would have a central dc setup. YMMV

Yes, the Rockler unit is nearly identical and it's on sale now for $30 off at $219.99. I tried to buy one, but both of my local Rockler stores were out of stock and they'd have to order it. The ShopFox has a bit more HP (1HP vs. 3/4) and a better bag (5 micron vs. 30 micron) for about the same price. I'm just glad I stumbled upon it on Amazon Prime.

I'm very happy with the Rockler Dust Right 21 foot expansion hose for my small shop needs (one machine at a time). The Rockler floor sweep and bench duster attachments also work great for picking up what the lathe dust hood misses.

After trying out the oak/rare earth magnet mount I made for the dust hood I made a few adjustments. Having the two oak legs 6" apart got in the way of my banjo and sanding disk set up. I wound up removing the right side oak leg and added a vertical leg that rests on my bench behind the lathe. This now allows lots of room to adjust things on the lathe without having to remove the DC hood.

I've found that I really need and use the DC for my 16" bandsaw and Makita planer. I got the wide nozzle attachment for the DC hose which I've found very useful for cleaning up around the lathe. The dust hood doesn't appeal to me even though I recognize that's to my detriment. The one your using seems like a very practical one though.

For anybody else looking to add wireless switching to their dust collectors...since Halloween decorations are starting to show up in stores, and Christmas ones will be right behind them, it should be fairly easy to find wireless remotes locally.

Just make sure they're rated for enough current for whatever you're attaching! I've seen some rated for 15amps and others rated for far less.

Since lawn decorations often involve lots of pieces, some of these remotes are available with change-able channels so you can have more than one remotely triggered outlet or you can easily get more than one remote for a given outlet (just set the duplicates to the same channel as your outlet).

If you want to save an extra buck or two, shop for these right after Halloween when the leftovers will have their prices slashed.

Good points about finding the wireless controllers. The Woods brand unit I got on Amazon for $9 is rated at 15amps, and my DC only draws 7 amps. I found a similar unit at my local Lowe's, but they wanted $27! Hard to beat Amazon!

Here's a link to big box store for a wireless remote kit. Looks like $10 is the best I found on short notice (and that one's only rated to 13 amps). Extra remotes for one of the other brands (so you can keep a remote with each tool if your DC system runs to multiple tools eventually) are under $7/each.

+1 on checking the draw for the wireless remote. Someone I know (as I certainly wouldn't do this :biggrin fried a pair of the big box store remote outlets with an albeit larger air cleaner. YMMV. DAMHIKT.

Does make quite a difference doesn't it?
