Well, I have been putting it off and putting it off and today I had to finally break down and ........clean.... my shop up some. Got some pics below that are about 1 hour into it off and on. Got one table cleared of, then filled back up and vacuumed around the BS. The reason for this was two fold, safety as I had to lean over items to make a cut on the BS and also Power, I will be running more plugs down the east wall and add lighting to the north end while running a dedicated circuit for the DC that will be on a light switch by he door to make it easier to turn on until I get a remote for it.

Storms are moving in so we will see how far I get. I hope to get it far enough along to at least be able to set the ladder up to hang the lights.

Hey Chris, your shop looks great! Now, can I come over and use your band saw again?

I went into my shop yesterday and thought "how the hell did all this get in here?" I am in the shop for other reasons almost every day but it just hit me that I need to clean mine. I swear my shop crap breeds. I wonder if if the junk can teach the good lumber to procreate because it seems to enjoy a life of celibacy while the crap multiplies like rabbits.

Bill, you are always welcome. I would say come have a beer and cut some wood but I only have one rule in the shop. No Alcohol. Guess if I had more rules I would not have so much to clean up.

hmmm rule #2 - Put that back where you got it.

Hilarious. But sometimes the junk will cover up some nice wood and make it like Christmas when you sweep the floor and find that HRB w/ the perfect Heart Sap mix that you could swear you put right over there.....

Ok, Chris, here is mine. I clean it, well, sometimes...when my my says to!

Wow you have a lot of stuff in that small area.

Where do you park the cars?

I always gotta get the cars back in when I'm done........

My Bandsaw is as big as the red one...... I had to work in the Garage at my old house and had to make room for a suburban to fit. My truck stayed out. That was one good thing about the shopsmith. I can/could just roll it right out of the way.

Yep I hear ya I have to have everything on wheels at my place, i pull out the cars, then wheel the machines out I plan to use and set up the shop, then reverse it after I'm done for the day.

The only things that aren't on wheels is my Metal lathe (too heavy) and the work bench (again too Heavy) they are on the left and right walls. Every thing else is moble, even the extra freezer we have in there.

My truck stays out also it would never fit; 4wd and too high to fit.

Chris,
Do you want to come and clean mine???? I know when i finally get around to it, I'm just gonna move everything outside and clean as I put the stuff back. I wonder how many times, I'll have to tell everyone that I am not having a yard sell. My shop is a 24' X 30' two story garage. I've been waiting on a pretty day and enough time off of work to get the job done. Time is hard one to get enough off.

Clean Shop

Funny story - For the past 3 weeks I've been building a new shop in the back yard and trying to move stuff from my garage shop to this new one. Well, I have a 7 yr old grand daughter who lives in Kyle, Tex and their garage has never seen a car - I mean it is stacked floor to ceiling, wall to wall with "stuff". A few weeks ago she was visiting and on Friday night wanted to see my new "shop" (building) in the back yard - she thought that was great. Well, the weekend progressed and at some point Saturday she asked - "PaPa, what you gonna do with the garage when you get you machines moved?" I told her we were trying to get the cars back in the garage. She replies, "Cars in the garage, is that what a garage is for?" - TRUE STORY !!

I don't about the rest of you but my shop buddy and I like elbow room.

I like elbow room but my 11'x20' shop does not allow for it, nor does my check book. Been considering calling Tuff Shed and seeing what it would cost to make it a 20'x20' but that will be a few years down the road.

Understand that! We went with no garage from when we moved in the house in 1988 to 2006, when we finally got to where we could build what you see on the back of the house. Because we waited we were able to build one garage to handle all our needs, cars motorcycle and tools for DIY. It was after all that before I ever saw and took interest in pen turning. The space is a blessing.

I think it'd be great to have another turner come and help clean the shop. We know what's good, what's worth saving, and what is plain garbage.

it's tiring for me to have my wife or stepson try to help since I have to stop every few minutes and answer questions about the stuff.

so, since me, renowb and justturnin all live in Houston...and since both of their shops are clean...when would ya'll like to come over and clean mine?

Well I didn't make much progress on the cleaning but I did get 3 plugs wired up and added 2 more sets of dual 4' florescence's over the Lathe and Shopsmith while moving the singles that were in these spot to more utility locations. Having the 3 extra plugs will change the shop. I have been help captive by the west wall having all but one of the plugs. Each wall has its own breaker and then the lighting on its own. I am going to add a 4th 20amp breaker for the DC and run some 3way switches, one by the lathe and one between the Shopsmith and BS. This will make it easier to turn it on and off for the quick sandings that I typically don't because it would take me longer to walk over and flip the switch, walk back, sand, and walk back to turn it off than to just sand the durn thing. I usually feel these choices in the morning. I am also wanting to run some piping to my compressor to make drops by the Lathe, BS, Shopsmith and soon to be established casting station so I don't have that trip hazard laying on the floor all the time. Thought I had some plugs but I cant find them so off to lowes I go t grab a pack.

If I am disciplined enough to finish before destroying again I will post some pics of the new layout.

Every time I go out to the garage (shop) I realize mine needs a good cleaning too. I have a plan, it's implementing it that is the tough part.
Here it is: I wish I had elbow room! Single car garage, shared with 3 dogs, laundry, and overflow storage.
