Is it possible to produce a deep gloss finish with Shellawax? How does it hold up to everyday use? If recommended, would you use the cream or the liquid? Thanks! Tom

Shellawax is not the most durable finish. The liquid is used more for large turnings. It is possible to get a nice gloss. If you must do it do at least 8 coats. A CA finish does hold up a lot better to everyday use. I did a pen with 3 coats and the finish lasted about 6 months. I did one with 8 coats the pen does not get used and it still looks fine.

Most any wax on a pen is not going to hold up for very long unless the pen is not used very much at all. That is why the CA/plexi finishes are so popular. I used Shellawax for my first few pens, but was not very impressed with it.

I use Shellawax on turnings (not pens) that will see limited handling -- just turned a couple of Koa desk bases for Barons with shellawax -- allow a week or so and then head to the buffers and end with carnuba.

Friction polishes and shellac are not friendly to moisture and heavy handling like most used pens get. Easy to apply but not especially durable.

My experience with Shellawax

This product is manufactured in Australia....it is a great product...goes on easily with friction, gives a very shiny finish. Remember, if using Shellawax, it is a friction polish and even though it seems dry when finished, it still has to dry for a few days to a week or so after. It continues to dry and cure after you finish. Best not to handle it until then.

As the others have said, it is not one of the most durable, long lasting finishes, but if you want to cover a wood that may not be handled alot or frequently, it goes on quickly and will last quite awhile.

I have used it on several occasions and have never had a complaint from a customer.

From the manufacturer the cream is not recommended for pens (we had a debate on the Aussie forum a while ago)

I use it when I want a natural finish and tell the recipients to give it a bit of a buff every now and again with a furniture wax
