shellac as a primer?

Hello all, i am restoring an old cabinet and decided to replace the glazing with wood panels (thin plywood). I need to stain it but before that i wanted to use some shellac as a primer. What kind of varnish can i use afterwards? i believe water based stains are ok. has anyone tried such a finish before? any advice is appreciated, cheers.

IF the shellac is waxless, any finish can be applied over it.
