What would be the shelf life of CA--thin, med and thick. My CA is kept in the basement where the temp is close to 60 degrees. I just hate to keep buying fresh bottles all the time when I probably don't use 20 per cent of it. I have started marking the date of opening the CA so I know how old it is. Also I have some mylands sanding sealer and finish. Any thoughts on shelf life here? Thanks

A search of the archives turned up these two topics:

EDIT IN: The above may help with CA, IIRC Mylands has an expiration date printed on the label.

John,
I read all the threads on the topics as quoted by Monty... can't give you concrete answer, but I have had a bottle of CA sit in my shop for a year, in Houston heat and humidity and be okay for over a year.. My shop in Houston was a stand alone building in the back yard and on summer days could reach 120 deg inside... lowest temp in Houston I remember was mid to high 20's... I'm turning more now, so a bottle doesn't last quite so long before I use it up... but my shop now is a stand alone metal building.. Tennessee temps reach around 100 in summer and mid teen's in winter... I have not lost a bottle of CA yet. I don't use Mylands, so no comments on that.

Here in humid Toronto Canada, I get 9 months to a year from a bottle. I know it is starting to go when I can't get a good finish anymore. The finish constantly ends up very bumpy when the CA is old.

I keep mine in the refrig and have had some in there for about a year with no problems.
As far as the Mylands I believe you will be going through it fast enough to not worry about a shelf life!

I alos have kept my CA for over a year. I have two bottles in the freezer that I will use when the time comes. I do not finish with CA or Mylands only Laquer. Mylands finish only lasts for a small time. If you pay $50+ for a pen it would be nice if it looked good in a year.
