I have a bottle of BLO that I have had for ages. There is a ring round the bottle but the BLO looks good. Any way to check it? Shelf life? I have seen alternate coats of CA and BLO on wood blanks.

Start with BLO and then alternate?
There are as many ways and techniques for using boiled linseed oil and CA together as there are those who use them. Google is your friend. Searching will give you several suggestions. The library here on IAP should have two or three articles on the subject. I know there is one ;-).
Searching threads here will also give you lots of information.

I typically start with BLO and let it dry for 24 hours. I then go through my normal finishing process.

I used the same BLO for years without issues. If it isn't thicker than normal or gelled or stringy, it is probably fine. If you are unsure, put it on a piece of scrap to test whether it dries and polymerizes properly. If it stays sticky or gummy or looks wrong, toss it.
