Ok, now that the Bash is over, let's get back to business! I'm looking for ideas for a Shelby Cobra pen. Basically, there's a lady who wants to get a pen for her husband for Father's Day. He has a dark gray Shelby Cobra and she would like to have a pen made to match the color and have the emblem and his initials on it. She says he has several Mont Blanc ballpoints and prefers "that size". I'm assuming that this would be along the lines of a euro style, but I'll probably need to get some more info from her on that... are all Mont Blanc ballpoints around the same size? I don't know as I haven't really looked at that many. I guess I'm looking for ideas on how to go about doing the logo since the pen will probably be on the thinner side. Do you think decal or laser? Do any of you know of and clips that already exists with the "Cobra" emblem or any other items with the emblem that I could incorporate into the pen? I'm thinking maybe a custom pen box that looked like the back end of the car would be cool...
Like I said, just looking for other ideas, give me what you got!

I have seen all kinds of this very popular idea

Thanks. Yeah, I think the white one with the cobra on it is closest to what I want to do. I'm wondering if it would look best to paint the tubes, place a decal on and cast in clear or cast the resin with the paint mixed in and laser engrave the cobra on the surface? I've also found several keychains and other items on Amazon that I could use on the top of a box to really "spice it up"...

Ford guards this symbol as stringently as they guard the the Ford symbol. be careful.

If I am correct there is a lot of carbon fiber on that. Any way you can match the carbon fiber color and if it has a stripe match that? Put the guy's initials or name in the same SHELBY font with a Cobra over it. You might get away with no copy right violation if it does not say SHELBY under the cobra.

She sent me two pictures, but they are of the back end. It LOOKS like the lower "lip" section of the body panels might be carbon fiber. Doesn't appear to have stripes. I think what I will do is put the cobra on the pen with his initials underneath, then if I do a box, I will use a keychain or something that I purchased with the emblem already on it and inlay it into the wood. I assume that wouldn't break any copyright laws...? Thanks for the ideas.

In looking at the shelby site, i wonder who's making these pens for them? they look very familiar, Sierra kit and CSUSA pen box. anyone know who it is?

Actually, edit that: it says made by Keith Brown. Isnt he a member on here? Name sounds familiar

No Keith Brown showed up in a member search, but bid find a Kevin Brown.

cobra skin dyed to match car color, label, cast????

Actual cobra skin, now I hadn't thought of that yet!!

I would dye and cast, turn all the way down, then apply label and either re-cast and turn or do CA build to size. I may have some cobra scrap that could work. Send me a PM tonight and I will check (I have CRS and will definitely forget by then!)

how about this one?

Sorry about the laser alignment line down the stripes

I once had a special order for a pen to match a Honda S2000. I ordered color-matched touch-up-paint, and cast painted tubes to exactly match his car. I also put some black nylon taffeta around half the top barrel to look like the convertable top. The woman who commisioned the pen told me that her husband initially didn't understand what the pen represented, but after he looked at it next to his car, he wouldn't let go.

That was before I bought a laser engraver. If I make one again, I'll probably engrave the VIN on one barrel.

I hope that helps spark some ideas,
Eric
