My mother had an MRI in December which showed a tumor on her pancreas, early indications were that it was pancreatic carcinoma. Needless to say our holidays were very bittersweet. The local general surgeon thought that they would have to remove part of her pancreas and her spleen with the hope that it had been caught early. We sought a second opinion from a specialist at the UVA Emily Couric Cancer Center who thought it was a nueroendocrine tumor which is a much slower growing cancer which meant that chance of successful treatment was much higher and that there was a possibility that surgery may not be necessary. The specialist suggested an endoscopic biopsy to determine next steps. Mom turned 82 yesterday and had her endoscope today which revealed that her tumor was the type that was extremely slow growing and that we simply need to monitor it. Obviously very good news. Sorry to bore you with this story, but it feels good to share something positive.
