Hi All,

I'm gathering the stuff I need to make a rolling, portable separater.

My question is is it enough to have just the 2 elbows mounted on the lid, like it shows on the box,or do I need to make some kind of baffle to make sure the dust doesn't go out into the bag?

Any help is surely appreciated!

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks for the link.

His shows the 1 elbow on the otside, and the other a staight fitting in the middle. The kit I have is 2 elbows, and they show them both towards the outside.Maybe I will need to modify one?

The baffle he made looks like what I thought I'd seen on this site, but couldn't remember the name.I'm going to make one like that.

i'm so short on space that a 32 gal trash can won't fit,so I took the suggestion of the salesman at the Rocler store, and bought a thick cardboard cement form-tube from Home Depot.I's 12 inches in dia,and about 5 or 6 feet tall, and am making the ends out of wood.I'm hoping that is enough volume, and I won't lose too much suction power.

I'm using the dust-right vac they sell there.that has worked well except the bag gets plugged so easily,I have to shake it out after just one pen.

So I'm hoping this will work.If it doesn't,at least I'll have fun making it!

Thanks,
Steve

As long as the elbows create a cyclone effect it should be OK, but it will all depend on your volume and the amount you suck up.

You were right,I tried it without the baffle plate, and it works great.I shortened the cement form tube by a foot, so it's 3 feet high, and that seems just perfect.

I turned about a dozen sqare blanks to 3/4'' round, and it never lost any suction, and the new bag had only fine sawdust in it,the rest was on the bottom of the barrel. Before,I would've had to shake it out about a dozen times.
Now I just have to finish mounting the dolly platform and paint it so it looks nice.

Best part was how inexpensive it was to make. The Rockler guy had a good tip with using the cement form for the body.

It was a fun project.Bummed that i didn't do it 2 years ago when I started,though.

Thanks,
Steve

Years ago I took a 45 gallon drum with the big lid and put the shop vac on top. I put 4 wood plugs on the lid with 2" or so diameter plastic pipes screwed to them, high enough to allow access under it. The Vac's wheels sit in the pipe extensions. Vac's suction hose goes to the centre of the lid with the hose to the machine or nozzle going to the outside edge. It will pull until about 2/3 full before filling the vac with the bigger stuff. It takes up about the same floor space as the shop vac while giving the extra capacity.

Lets see some pics of this thing Steve!!!!

I got it all done today, and I'm happy to say that it all turned out OK.I was worried because I had to shorten the tube another 6 inches because of the added height of the casters.I wanted the chips & dust to not have to go uphill, but was worried that the smaller volume would hurt it.

This was as big as I have room for,so I'm glad it works!

I posted pics on my Photobucket penmaking scrapbook. If you'd like to see what it looks like, click on the link below, and there are several pics all toward the bottom of the grid, when you click "View All" , ( or pics 69-73 )

Here it is...

Nice Job on everything!! I just built a separator yesterday using the same form from HD. I used a Dust Deputy going to my shop vac. It works ok but not enough CFM to collect some of the pieces. I wasn't sure how well that type of collector would work. Now that I have seen your setup, I am putting a new dust collector on my list and just replace the lid I have on my separator.

I like how you have everything mobile on carts. I assume this is to maximize the space you have in your shop.

Thanks guys for the encouraging words!

I added a last picture that shows how tight the room is,I didn't think a full sized one would fit.

That's a great video,Lin.Yours is way more advanced in the design and construction. That's neat how you film the chips circling inside it.Your shop looks like a dream shop,Wow! Thanks for posting the link. You are a good teacher!

Take care,
Steve
