I just made a really good score on a few Black Walnut logs the other day. they are fairly big (for pen making....). however, I am thinking it would be nice to have them milled out to lumber. there is one issue though.... I don't know anyone with a mill to do this for me. If any of you live in or near the Portland Oregon area and can point me to a mill that could handle some smaller logs (5 -8 feet with about 14IN diameter) I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks all,
Joel

A few years ago I had a friend call me and asked if I could use some Walnut. He had a tree in his yard that had to come down. We made a deal and I bought the whole tree. Unfortunately. he had contracted with a logger to cut it down and he ruined a lot of the value since to him, only the straight 8' sections were of any value. He ruined the crotch wood by cutting up into small pieces, too small to fit in the sawmill. I did get almost 300 bdft of nice Walnut after I had it cut and kiln dried at the mill I worked at. Still have quite a bit, I keep telling myself I need to make some projects with it but never seem to make the time.

I don't know how it is Oregon, but in some states you can contact the Dept. of Forestry or the Dept. of Natural Resources for a list of mills in that state.
