Sapele - Series 7 Long Range Fishing Tackle Box

This is a new wood for me to try on a fishing box. It looks like quarter sawn African mahogany, but is sands better, takes finish better and is more resistant to bumps. I've already received and order for a jig box using sapele so others agree.

It is pretty to me.

Not sure the grain structure is small enough for a pen, but in larger projects it is wonderful

Yeah. I use it a ton in cutting boards and boxes. I love the iridescent grain pattern.

Sapele is often used as a substitute for mahogany. I have used it in pens and it comes out great.
Very nice work on the tackle box!

Those are some pretty fish...
one several of our picket station voyages while I was in the navy, we had more lines over the side than a fishing trawler... chief's had little to do on ship with all the competent 2nd class petty officers, so they fished.... I actually had to send a "fish report" daily to the Navy because of the number of fish we caught... most were dauphins, a variety of tuna, and enough were caught that most of the crew had one to take home after the picket... I was given a 42 pounder that I took to my Uncle in San Francisco....

When I was onboard my last duty station, the ship was part of the air early warning system and assigned to the air force once on picket station.... the picket station was a position off shore about 200 miles where we steamed in a circle for about 30 days watching the aircraft coming overhead and challenging their "squalk"... a signal that each air liner transmits to verify they are legitimate/friendly... otherwise we alerted the air force and they sent up a couple of jets to check them out. We did 30 days in, 30 days out. there are/was stations all along the west coast (and I assume the same on the east coast).
We also had a large radar dome under the ship that checked for subs.
My job was to maintain communications from the ship to shore.
