I have been using MM sanding pads followed by HUT Crystal Coat friction polish and have been reasonably satisfied with the results. But, I want to try using a sanding sealer to see if I can improve the finish. Does it matter if the sanding sealer I use is shellace based or lacquer based or polyurethane based? I can't buy either cellulose or shellac based sanding sealer locally.

It is the solvents that are the problem, and not whether the finish or sealer is lacquer, shellac, or whatever. You can get away with putting almost anything over anything IF YOU WAIT for what is under it to totally cure or dry, and sand the surface, before putting on another finishing material.

How long to wait depends on what you are using to seal the wood and fill the grain. We use CA glue because it can be sanded and covered with another finish in a few minutes. Everything else takes somewhere from a few hours to a few days.

If you don't want to use CA glue, and don't want to wait, then you should be using the same sealer as the finish top coat. In this case that is the HUT friction polish, and you should be using a shellac based sealer. Such a sealer was available at Home Depot the last time I looked.
 
Thanks for the input. I haven't had tremendous success with CA, sometimes it seems to work fine and other times not. I tried BLO and CA as a finish and all I got was a mess. I'll look at Home Depot today.
