While I'd trust HF with items like screwdrivers and adjustable wrenches, I just don't know if I could trust them to produce a cheap lathe that runs true. Has anyone used one?

Skye,

That is EXACTLY the way I think of HF. HOWEVER, I have tried a few of their motorized tools and been shocked to find, they WORK> Eagle and I had several good laughs about this - he also was shocked that they worked.

Your question is a good one, HAS anyone used their lathes???

the 14-40 lathe is the one I got started on.
It's crap. If you mount a piece of wood that weighs more than a pound or so on it, it starts bouncng all over the shop.
It doesn't accept morse taper accessories.
It's loud.
the lathe bed is just box tubing that bends under the slightest tailstock pressure.
AND the speed settings are way too high for any form of faceplate turning.

I'm my opinion, if I was gonna buy a lathe at HF, I'd at least buy the $199.99 one.
I've seen it in person and it seems a lot more sturdy.
It's cast iron and I think it accepts morse taper accessories.
the speeds are also more reasonable.

you'd be able to do a lot more for your $ if you bought that one.
the $79 one will just disappoint you.

just my $.02

I have the 12 x 33 3/8 and have been using it for over 4 years, and got it on sale back then for around $200. I'm very surprised how well it has done for me considering the price. I would recommend it for someone on a budget.

I have the HF var speed mini. I have only turned pens on it. I love it though. The only problem is the MT1. I've been making pens for a few months and have not had one problem out of it. I look at the larger ones. One of them does no have a knock out bar. The drive center seems to be permanent or screw out. I am not sure. The stands seems really cheap on the large ones also. Just my opinion

Hi, i have the 10" sliding cms, and it is right on for i think $79 back when i bought it. I have a DeWalt 12" cms and it cuts the same. I bought it to stay up at the mountain cabin and if it should get stolen i am not out of a lot a bucks. You have to change out the blade though and there is a lot of good 10" blades at very good prices.
