I went to a turning seminar recently and the guy had two small pieces of weather stripping on the lathe chuck. The weather stripping I mean is the foam kind with a sticky back. He explained that the ornaments he made got him close to the chuck and the foam let him know when he was too close to it!
The hollowed and pierced ornaments he made were impressive. He took a drill bit with a bit of tape as a depth gauge and drilled several holes in the ornament. He later used the holes to judge the wall thickness.
