I had to kiss a lot of frogs before I finally found a prince. Most of the double edge razor heads are pure crap. Present one of them to a wet shaver and they will laugh you out of town.

The Golden Nib carries a decent double edge head. IMHO, it IS WAY overpriced, and made in India. BUT, it will accept the Merkur platinum blades and operates "similar" to a premium German wet shavers. Also the chrome plating is not the best.

BUT, so far in my quest, this is the second best option to dismantling a Merkur and customizing it. All the Chinese and Tiwianes stuff is PURE JUNK!

Here is one of the Golden Nib's heads done in Lignum Vitae.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, they are out. I'll keep checking.

I was looking at DE razors this morning and wondering what might be involved in disassembly and salvage to construct a butterfly head razor for my son.

Andy, would you have any comments on that, even on a Merkur adjustable head.

I have remanufactured old Wilkerson Sword Butterfly razors, not really difficult, but hard to find.

The Merkur Classic (non-butterfly) is quite simple. Remove the head and drive a new handle under it. Unfortunately, the best price I can find on a simple Merkur head is about $35. EASY TO DO, with a metric tap and die set. JUST EXPENSIVE.

Way back when, I was a ward of the government, and we were issued these stainless steel double edged shavers fitted with aluminum handles and they worked flawlessly. I wish I had a bunch of those things stashed away.

Where's the Army surplus stores when you need one?

I bought a P38 can opener for my key ring a while back. As an old Boy Scout, a P38 and a flint fire starter were mandatory "pocket items".

My new Chinese made P38 didn't make it through one can:(

A have a friend who is really industrious and he has figured out how to make straight razors. He has made me one but I have not made the slicks for it yet. He also buys cheap razors, and breaks the slicks off and re-slicks them with wood.

Not trying to venture too far off topic, BUT... the p38s came up in a FaceBook discussion toinght. I mentioned there that my dad's old Vietnam War era openers lasted as long as I I managed to keep up with them (well over 20 years), but I bought a replica in the last year or so and it probably opened 4 cans before I tossed it.

Back to the task at hand... I might get one of THESE to shave with, and maybe a second to toy around with.

Donnie:
It's stainless steel. As long as the "clam" closes tight enough to keep the blade from moving, it should be fine.

On the OTHER HAND, I'd use the body toolz blades to scrape paint off glass or something. I DON'T trust the Chinese with sanitary metals (or dog treats, for that matter). If you cut yourself, you could end up with lead poisoning.

Toss the blades and get the Merkur Platinum ones from Germany. Merkur makes surgical instruments.....their reputation is at stake on every blade.

Respectfully submitted.
