Wow, what a bummer. It's always sad when you lose a good friend. I love golden retrievers. I've had 3 over the years, the last one passed the day before I got married.:( Now we have 2 cats[xx(]

I am sorry to hear of your loss Lee. Someone stloe my Siberian Husky sun evening from my back yard and I just rescued him the previous friday.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks guys.. It is a big loss to us because this dog was brought home just before our first son was born. She has been with all four kids all thier life. Those kids put her thru the ringer, stepping on her as toddlers, pulling her tounge, bitting, and all manners of things only a toddler can get away with. That dog never so much as gave it a second thought. She also loved to ride in my Jeep with the top off, doors removed and the windshield folded to the hood.

My condolences. I have 2 pooches (brother and sister from the same litter) sitting right here and it gets me choked up just thinking about it. I hope I go before them and I'm only 42! Again, my condolences.

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of a family member. I fear that I will be feeling the same pain very soon. You guys gave Abby a full and wonderful life. Remember all the good times you had.

Lee,

So sorry for your loss, our corgi is our late life child and that day will devistate us.They do become family.

Lee, sorry for your loss :(. Last year our first family dog passed away and it was tough to explain to the kids. They still ask how Taz is doing in Rainbow Bridge (great poem).

I have had dogs all my life. At 70 I've see a good many of them go....and it always hurts. All you can do is love them while they are here and miss them when they are gone.
God seems to have missed something when he only gave them 15 years or so and us so many more years. Maybe we were meant to have many of them to love over our lifetime and that is our reward.
Sorry for your loss and sorry about another birthday.
I often wish I was half the man that my dog thinks I am.

I'm so sorry to hear about your pup, Lee. OldWrangler wrote everything that crossed my mind, and well said. I feel for you my friend.

Jimmy Stewart wrote a poem about his dog Beau. If you've never read it, it's worth it. Here's a link to the poem:

It's hard to read in Jimmy's unique voice, though. Years ago I saw Jimmy Stewart read this poem on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It's definitely a reminder of classier times and classier television. Here's a link to the clip if you want:

Very well said indeed OldWrangler. You brought the second tears to my eyes tonight. You have a very nice way with words.

We had a golden retriever that developed cancer tumor on it's neck. It was in so much pain our cousin had to shoot him. I was only about 10 yrs. old and I wasn't very happy about it. Now we have a shelty and blue heeler mix[:p][:p] and 5 cats:(:( My brother raises 2 beagles for puppies and sells them. We have our share of pets.:) I'm sorry about your dog Firefyter-emt.[V]:(

I had a Golden Retriever many years ago. I was looking for a dog and new what I wanted. A young girl had to give her puppy up and when I layed my eyes on him there was no way you where getting him away from me. Beautiful and intelligent they are still one of my favorite. Bear shares a place in my heart that only one other pet holds. She was a cat named bandit. They both had wonderful lives but I miss them. My heart is heavy at your loss.

I think the memory of old dogs brings out a bit of poet in all of us.
But if you don't want the hurt when they go and don't need the love while they're here....get a cat!!

LOL... George, that is a good one!

Again, thanks guys. All is holding out good, the kids are dealing with it great, although my wife is pretty gloomy over it still. All will heal with time and only the good will remain.
