Hi Everybody!

We buried my Dad yesterday. He had said he didn't want anything too elaborate, so I can't help but think he had something to do with the raging snowstorm that kept the graveside service short and sweet. He was buried with full military honors, and after the gun salute, we all wept through the playing of Taps. A sad day, but a good day!

And here's the question. I was given the spent shell casings from the gun salute. I am thinking that it would be nice to make pens from them. Casing pens are really not my thing, and I have never learned to make them, and I am not really in the mood to learn now. Who among us would be interested in a commission from my family to make 21 pens from these spent casings? I think they are .308 military brass, but since I don't shoot that cartridge myself, I'm not really sure.

Thanks for being there, my Friends.

Scott.

Scott, there are many here that have an inkling of where you are today. No one can truly say that they know what you are feeling, but there are many that wish to feel and share your pain to lessen your burden. Keep your Dad alive in your heart and mind, remembering all the good times and letting all the rest become the past. It is natural and OK to grieve the loss of a loved one. Do not let anyone keep you from doing just that, it is a healing power given to us, use it. Just know that your many friends here on IAP as well as other places feel and care for you. You and your family will be in our prayers and thoughts. Hang in there.

Saddened by your loss Scott. We buried my Father-in-law last month, also with a 21 gun salute. I had several of the shells converted into pen kits by Eric at Little River Crafts. He's also known as Sylvanite on IAP. The converted shells were great and reasonably priced (same price as the bullet pen kits he sells). You can see my finished pens here.

Scott, please accept my condolences. Because of men like your dad, we are here to enjoy our freedom. Someone here will get your pens made for you, I am positive of that. Wish I were more experienced at it. I'd do it for no commission. Take care friend.

I have been looking at the kits from Little River since the replica kits just don't have the feel of real brass. I would give them a call. Sorry about your Dad. It takes time to heal. Let the grief happen.

Scott Sorry for your loss, it's a great thing your father did, we owe men and women like him a debt that we can never repay. I would suggest Sylvanite, I've done a few of his kits, and they are the best, also might check with Captain G, he does some beautiful cartridges.
Condolences to your family.

My Condolences to you and your family. Keep in mind that along with the pen idea, it is customary to place 5 spent brass in the flag display case if you make or have one made.

O God, Who has commanded us
to honor our father,
have compassion in Thy mercy,
on the souls of my father;
forgive sins,
and grant that I may see him
in the joy of eternal brightness.
Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Doyle Wheeler at the Pensmith helped me out with 4- 270 cartridges fired in a 21 gun salute at a funeral. Made great pens. He included the brass crimp from the blanks, which I forwarded to the recipients.

Hi Dudley!

The flag had three spent cases in with it, so I thought it was three. I'll have to look. I do intend to make a nice flag case, unless you know somebody who is really good at it. Thanks!
