I just set up a brand new Ryobi band saw model # BS903.

I think there may be an issue with the motor. However, this is my first band saw so I may be missing something as well.

The motor will turn on, but it will not spin. I pulled the bottom wheel off the band saw, and tried to hand-turn the gear knob coming out of the motor. I can get about a 1/4 turn and it tightens up way too much. I can continue to spin it all the way around, but with a lot of force.

I put the wheel back on, and placed it at a spot where the gear knob was "free" and turned it on. The motor would spin again that 1/4 turn and completely lock up.

Is there something wrong with the motor and I need to return it, or is there a way I should be making an adjustment and the owners manual just doesn't go that far into detail.

Everything else I have set up 100% according to instructions.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

there could be some problem in the motor itself. not sure what a motor that small woudl have in the way of bearing or alignment. but with the resistance coming and going as you describe I am thinking an alignment issue of some sort. even a bent armature or such. I know there would be no way I would be trying to "Fix" a brand new saw. It would be on it's way back. just had a similar experience with a Ryobi belt/disc sander. I now own a HF belt disk sander. I have never had anything but bad news with anything Ryobi. might just be luck of the draw but they have received their three stikes with me.

Look and see if the shaft on the motor is rubbing against the hole in the side plate where it comes through the side of the saw. These are pretty simple machines. All you have is a motor with a timing belt pulley attached. This goes through the side of the machine and connects to the drive belt, which in turn goes up to the pulley on the bottom wheel. The top mounting screw on the motor runs in a slot that allows you to adjust the belt tension. Could it be the motor is to far one way or another and the shaft is hitting the sheet metal. Try loosening that top bolt and see if that helps.
