I know a lot of IAP members are either running a pen related business or are thinking about it. Here's a link to an article you may find interesting. Maybe even inspiring. It has nothing to do with pens, but contains a lot of wisdom from a very experienced young lady. The challenges of selling farm products are not that different from selling pens.

Feeling grateful yet? Teenage poultry farmer dishes straight talk - The Denver Post

Enjoy.

Awesome article ... I can relate to that with our plant nursery also ... I get sick of hearing "I can get this cheaper at Walmart" or "What's the least amount you will take for this?" Yeah, mine might be higher by a few cents, but mine are healthier. I guess they just think I press a seed into the dirt, water it, and boom! Instant plant! They would be surprised if I listed out all the expenses in potting and growing that one plant. I find 75% of people are just looking for cheap.
And all of these people so into "support our local small businesses!" Yeah, they support us ... they come and buy a couple of plants for us to load into the trunk of their vehicle which is already loaded down with plants from Wal-mart!
Ok, sorry ... I got it out of my system now.

Now thats what I call a good kid who says kids these days have no sense or work ethic. Well it certainly is a kick up my butt to redouble my efforts in hard times

So how many of you put your hair in pigtails and skip through the craft fairs?

Good article

I think that would be a fast way to get arrested! Great article and it does demonstrate why my wife and I have quit doing craft fairs. I now spend more time, per pen, making quality pens rather than a quantity of pens. I give my pens to friends and family and am back to my hobby now that I don't have to worry about that thing called "profit". The fun is back!

Too bad not everyone understands the expense and dedication it takes to run a business. This girl is sharp and knows this is not what she wants to do all her life, but at the same time appreciates it. Say quite a bit about her character and the way her family raised her. Well worth the read.
