Rope Twists onto Pens

Wanted to ask the group if anyone has success in creating Rope Twists on a pen blank. With the demise of the Beall Pen Wizard along with the Legacy lathe I'm no longer seeing any viable way to create these Rope twists. They look fantastic and the machines of the past did a really good job with them, especially the Legacy Lathe. That machine costs into the thousands so unfortunately it's out of my plans. Pen Wizard no longer made along with many of the other small ornamental machines designed around pen making. Woodcraft also long ago produced the MillLathe for a short time. That also went under due to slow sales. Anyone else experiment with success of other methods for creating a twist? Maybe will have to to creating this 100% with hand tools????? Would love to hear anyones postive experiences that worked without purchasing a $5,000 machine.

Craftsman made a jig for the router which can sometimes be found on C/L or other online sites—the Router Crafter.
I bought one used after seeing what a guy in our WWing club did with it.
It's just been sitting for years—I should put it on C/L.
 
There have been a few people here that have gone down that road. It does take some thinking outside the box because of the size of material you are working with. One such talented artisan that graced us with his knowledge here and a good friend of mine as we became through this forum, was Steven (SkipRat). he did a few things like this over the years. A cnc router with a rotary attachment should be able to do what you are asking about.
A small cnc router can be had for about what the pen wizard would cost.
Just a thought.
I have a homemade cnc router and a homemade rotary attachment. Have never used it for pens though. Maybe I will try one of these days.

Had a CNC router and it was great.......the programing killed me and the fun only lasted a year. Just to much to remember and do and to learn all the coding and different programs kept me up at night. The Pen Wizard is more down to earth for me......just can't find one to purchase.
