Well, today was my last day at work and as of Feb. 1st I will be offically retired after 38.7 years. My last day left a lot to be desired as it seemed everyone wanted everything done today, but it also reminded me of the the reason I was retiring. The hardest part though was saying good bye to my fellow co-workers and friends. There are a lot of unknowns in the road ahead but life is too short and precious to put off enjoying life. I plan on doing a lot more of my woodworking and making pens.

The one good thing after a last rough last day at work is when I got home I had my stub from my first retirement check in the mail.

I went though this almost two years ago. Same experience as you had on your last day. The best part was setting the alarm for the same time as when I was working and when it went off I turned it off and said %#!? it!

Just wished I had started turning pens sooner than I did.

One piece of advice

Don't look back...congratulations and may you enjoy a long happy and healthy retirement. But, as I said, don't look back. That job phase of your life is over, but your life is going on, so have a great ride and enjoy every minute of it.

Those who tell you that in a month or two you'll wonder how you ever found time to go to work are right...there's a lot to do once you aren't tied to the factory or office or wherever....

Congrads and don't look back. I am 14 months away. Please do not be one of those that can't stay retire and go back after a few months. Enjoy the rest of your life. You worked long and hard for these days. Enjoy whatever it is that makes you happy and woodworking and pen making sure are high on the list. Good luck.

At the brink of turning 56, I can't share how great it's going to be and all, but I sure do look forward to joining those ranks in 12 or so years. With any luck investments will be making more than me by then and smooth sailing can commence.

Good luck and enjoy the next phase of your life!

I did it at 54 - and I've been ok - not living a life of leisure but still pretty good.

Congratulations! Enjoy! I've got a couple months left myself. Looking forward to doing something different and enjoying it.

Told the guidance counselor in high school that what I wanted to be when I grew up was retired. Her reply was it takes about 40 years experience. Still got 20 to go, hope to do it in 10, either way since I restore cars that I will never be able to afford I am already living some guys dream retirement. Congrats, get some rest, then get back to turning.

The number one requirement for retirement is to enjoy it! I really hate getting old but retirement is GOOD!

Definition: Retired Person: Someone who gets up in the morning with nothing to do, and goes to bed at night with only half of it done.

As others have said, "I don't know where I ever found the time to go to work."

Enjoy, the real fun is just starting.

My first day of retirement was 1-1-13...I love it...LOTS of time to prepare for the shows I love attending.

Welcome to the New World !!

I'm spending my 50's making up for the overspending I did in my 30s & 40s. Had I not done that back then, I could think about retiring sooner as well. Good thing is I'll be debt free including the house by 60, and we'll see where life leads from that point!

As has been said, soon you will wonder how you found time to go to work. I retired in October of 2011 and it was the best thing I could have done. Work used to be fun, with good friends to work with and an understanding management that supported their employees. That turned into a place where very few had a positive word for the company and other workers; where benefits were cut year after year, and it just was not fun to go to work anymore. Enjoy your retirement, have fun.

You must have worked at the company where I work

Retiring is awesome.. I have retired twice and am looking forward to one more in the next couple of years.
Career 1 - 27 1/2 years in Human Resources with U S Postal Service
Career 2 - 11 years as small business owner
Career 3 - 9 years and still going as Business Services Director for Southwestern Assemblies of God University. This one has been the most fun.

Keep your mind and body active and you will enjoy many years of retirement.

Thanks for all of the well wishes, they are appreciated. R+1, still ended up getting up earley for a dentist apointment then spent the rest of the day helping my son pull fencing around his property. So, I guess the easy life is not quite here yet, but at least the things I did were by choice.
