I just retired, sold my farm and shop. I have moved into town for various reasons and now I will be working in my double garage. Quite a comdown from my large shop. I sold several large tools but kept some things fun.

Any ideas how to set up bidness in a double garage

Thanks

Don

Do you plan on keeping a car or two in the garage as well? That makes a huge difference in the layout.

If no cars, then traditional shop layouts work well.

Adding cars means you have to master storage and organization.

I have a Shopsmith for this reason. (That and it's a family hand me down.)

What kind of tools did you keep??

Truck in the drive not in the garage. I kept jet bandsaw, mini lathe, sander, large chop saw but unloaded table saw, drill press, mustard monster and several other items.

Well, with no cars, I recommend a layout that will complement your work habits.

storage, to Band saw, to drill press, to sander, to lathe. for example. A lot of layout depends on your particular work flow.

In general optimal flow and layout goes from storage to finished product in order of operations.

Don,

My shop is in a two car garage and I've seriously outgrown it. So bad, in fact, that I bought a mini lathe and took up penturning due to lack of floor space for bigger projects.

One thing that I would do over (and still may do) is to get rid of my overhead door & install swing-out doors. The overhead door limits my storage flexibility and lighting options.

Have fun & enjoy the new shop!

Congratulations on the retirement. Sounds like you are going to be making a nice shop. With that much room you should be able to have quite a set up. I have a tiny space and with things on wheels I am able to have quite a nice space with good storage and work space. Lots less upkeep without the farm and the big shop. Hope all goes well.
