I've been looking for a remote control for my dust collector for awhile now. It's a PIA to run from one room to another to switch it on and off. I don't want to just let it run all the time because it's noisy and too expensive to run for nothing when you aren't actively making dust.......

I've been looking at the Long Ranger unit at PSI. Well, when somebody in another thread here mentioned that PSI was running a sale on Amazon, I thought, "Ha, it must be one of those fortuitous opportunity things"; but before I got around to it, Tom McMillan, in yet another thread, mentioned that he had gotten a cheap controller on sale at Grizzly. I must have missed that since I had looked in my Grizzly catalog before and didn't find anything!

Well, the Grizzly store is just over the hill from my place so I popped on over and had a look yesterday. Son of a gun![:0] "An even more fortuitous opportunity!"

They have both the Long Ranger units at a price comparable to PSI and the Shop Fox controllers at a considerably cheaper price! Guess which I got!.....:D You also get two remotes with the Shop Fox units! Pretty good deal!:D BTW, the catalog price is shown correctly. Seems a bit strange to me, too.

Thanks, Tom, for the tip!;)

Somebody had mentioned that the remotes were awfully small; well, the catalog illustration makes them look a lot smaller than they really are. If you lose these in the wood chips or shavings then your eyes are a heckuva lot worse than mine![}:)] Or maybe your collector just isn't working at all![:p][}:)]

As a final note, it works like a champ! Even two rooms away!:)

I have the same remote and love it :)

The remotes clip nicely to my apron strap, too. I keep one on a peg above the table saw and one on my apron so I'm always near a remote :)

Uh, I'm thinkin' that if ya got one clipped to your apron, you can probably forego the one on the peg above the table saw, and STILL always be near a remote! .... just a thought.

It was me who mentioned the remote size. Actually, I got mine in the mail Monday and woodcraft sent the 110v and not the 220v unit. I called them and it is already in the mail and they are including the return paperwork so I can send the wrong one back. Mistakes happen and they are always very accommodating to me.
I plugged in the 110v unit to my band saw just for kicks. I like it so far. The remote is small, the size of a car remote. It also comes with a little clip to hang it on your belt loop.
I think its going to work just fine. And that walking across the room to the switch, well thats just not acceptable.[:D][:D]

Alright, Smarty Pants! Where do you suggest I keep the 2nd remote, then? :P

Truth be told, I don't always wear my apron and I used to spend most of my time at the table saw. That has been changing lately, though, and I may actually have to consider alternatives. Maybe order 30 remotes and have one every 18 inches around the shop so I don't have to take a step to find one?! :P

Remember my exercize idea!! Those who don't walk to the dc to cut it on will soon find that their arms are too short to reach the lathe!!! [:D]

I’m thanking of putting a switch near each blast gate to control the DC. I will never keep up with a remote. Even if I had 30 placed around the shop.

Ross51,

If you want switches near each blast gate then why don't you get the Long Ranger Multi Gate system and end up with switches ON each gate! When you open a gate, the DC come on. When you close the gate, the DC goes off. I have a complete set I am going to be listing for sale in the next few days. Contact me if you are interested. I bought a ClearVue cyclone and the motor on it is 5 hp so it will not work with the system.

I don't remember what make and model mine is, but it is small enough to loose or misplace. So I have it tied to a length of that dayglo orange high visibility tape that they use in forestry and construction.

I have the Long Ranger 110v and also cannot live without it. I have my DC on one side of the garage and I do all my woodworking on the other side of the garage. (everything is on wheels!)I have the Remote on my lathe or I can clip it on. Before I had it I would not use the DC half the time because I did not want to cross the garage everytime I needed it. Now I just push a button and use it everytime.

I use a power strip type of deal from Sears. Whenever I turn on the table saw, band saw or lathe, the dust collector also turns on. No remote controls to mess with, no other switches. It's that simple.
