Guess we need to get out more-last week surfing here at IAP ran across the tread about turning Thimbles.
This is something we have a call for but not really the time to build a inventory.

But I live in the get-r-done world not the keyboard pounder land.
(new saying that I like)

Within-in a hour the $54.95 bit was on the way. I think this was Friday.
Look what arrived today.

"Color me lost" (a saying I find frequently applies to me).

Nice bit, but why the pen (gorgeous tho it is) in a "Thimble" thread???

I'd try regrinding an old spade bit for next to free. But then, I'm not trying to mass produce these things.

The September 2008 issue of Woodturning (UK) magazine has an article on the fundamentals of long-hole boring. In it is a diagram and a paragraph about just this, reshaping a spade bit. And the neat thing of this is, besides being able to have several bits for the cost of the one, one can also create different sized thimbles as not all fingers are the same size!!!
