Refinishing Question

Not a pen question, sorry. But I do need some thoughts.

I'm refinishing a bed and chest of drawers I made for my son about 30 years ago. I finished with lacquer but don't have access to the same finishing setup as I did originally.

Can I put polyurethane as a top coat over lacquer without problems? The newer poly formulas would make life much easier.

Short answer is NO. It will peel over time. You can't scratch a tooth in the surface for it will show through. The question to be asked is why are wanting to do this?? Are you touching something up??? If you are totally refinishing then stripping is the way to go and add whatever finish. Not all lacquers are equal. As well as not all polyurethanes are not equal. Best not to mix when using either products. Good luck.
