After enjoying (really enjoying) retirement for 2 1/2 years, I am reentering the work force in the new year due to some tragic circumstances. One of the Directors in my old place of employment was killed in an accident. My old boss is not happy with how the employees have responded to the sudden loss of their leader and reached out to me to come back and manage that particular Division until they can find a permanent replacement. I reluctantly accepted with the understanding that I will be taking a preplanned trip in February and that they will move forward with finding a replacement. It's disappointing that the employees did not step up and work together during this difficult time. It's hard to understand human nature sometimes. Wish me luck in getting the train back on the tracks.

When a tragedy such as you describe happens, there is a void left and the employees need a leader that they trust and respect, otherwise you get chaos and it can happen rapidly. The employees become unsettled about the future of the organization and their own future. It sounds like the company has a great amount of confidence in you, Cody and I'm sure the employees will quickly come to that realization, also. Good luck and I'm sure it will be rewarding at least for a while. Don't let the powers that be drag their feet on finding the permanent replacement.

I wish you well Cody. An admirable acceptance of responsibility to assist a previous employer and most likely some co-workers. Kudos to you. Having met you, I understand your calming presence that will be helpful.

Good luck Cody! By the sounds of it, they must have some real good confidence in you to take care of the issue. Another good thing to look forward to, you get to retire again! Lol

Thanks everyone for your kind words and encouragement. It is an honor that they thought enough of me to seek me out but I almost feel like my parole has been revoked and I have to do some additional time. It is good to feel needed and to think that my service is still valued.

Good luck. I hope the company bringing you back doesn't offend the workers that feel they should be the new engineer for the railroad. I think it is an honor to be called in to fix a problem after being retired, I have no doubt you will succeed.

I think you have hit on the problem, apparently there are too many "engineers" trying to drive the train. As a result the train is spinning in circles. Hopefully, bringing someone from the outside in the interim will send a clear message. As my old and soon to be new boss said "they have gotten in front of their skis".

Good luck. You might consider a cut-off date for your time there. This would give some incentive to hire someone and not take advantage of you.
