Recently I’ve been making these little tobacco samplers.

It's an extremely quick and easy project. And it's nice to take a break from pens every once in awhile.

I'm not a smoker but I'm curious as to what is a sampler and where did you get the kits. Those all look great. I'm sure they'll be well received by and cigar aficionado.

I'm not a smoker either, but I think it's basically used to sample different types of pipe tobacco. But of course I'm sure people will smoke anything out of it as long as it's legal.

One of my online buddies had a bunch of them that he sold to me. I made a rough set of bushings out of pvc for them.

Since when has legal been a factor for smoking?

A long time ago, in a life far far away (it seems like someone else, but I suppose it is), I knew these as "one hitters". Very discrete. I suppose they still are for lots of people and that stuff is becoming basically legal, so I'm sure there is a market out there for them.

Chillums like this have been around for thousands of years. They originated in India and were used by holy men as part of various religious ceremonies. It has only been in the 1900's that they became more common in the USA. - Dave

Shawn Graham has a video on what he calls '$12 boxes' that are very similar to these - except that no kit is involved. I've made a bunch of them - they are fun, and are excellent practice in both design and careful machining, especially in the skill involved in crafting a good mortise and tenon box closure.

Shawn makes his from shop scraps and sells them for $12 - hence the name. He promotes them as needle or pill containers, and also as a place to stash backup cash (the cavity must be sized to hold rolled-up currency). But I would think that they would also work for tobacco or whatever alternative you might want to put in them.

I just saw Rizheng has those now. I believe they are also called "one hitters" or a "onie". Im sure they are called other things but I'm not up to date on that kind of lingo.
