Hi there
Some time ago I've made a few pens from real pieces of amber cast in a resin. Most of them were cut-offs, that jewelers that I'm working with supplied me. Few pieces were just a "wild" stuff.
The real problem with amber is to get rid of a "skin" on the outside of every piece. Pieces, that that are cut-offs still mostly have this skin on one or few sides.
This natural skin is rough, porous, all cracked, can peel off of the core.
So, that means that every small thing should be carefully sanded removing a lot of material in some cases. I don't have a tumbler or anything like that, so was doing it by hand with a help of Dremel. That's a lot of work!
Bolt action has mostly "wild" small pieces of a dark brown color (as I have been said, less valuable). Cigar and Sierra/Zodiac made mostly from cut-offs of milky-yellow, most valuable amber color. But BA sold instantly, and other two I still have
Enjoy!
