I was looking at a magazine article and in the corner was an ad for AARP. Looking at their website seems like a good deal $16.00 of 1 year of benefits. I am 52 and my wife is 51. Not going to ask if anyone is a member, just wondering what other groups might be good.

I'll NEVER join AARP. Besides TOTALLY disagreeing with AARPs politics, I hate them because they have NO RESPECT for my privacy. After opting out ( as prevailing laws allow me to do), getting on the no call list, and writing personal letters BEGGING to get off of their junk mail list, I STILL regularly receive more than one solicitation per week.

Additionally, I have contacted my Senators and representative asking them to review AARPs tax exempt status. As the nations largest reseller (and yes, they do retains the profits), why should AARP be tax exempt.

I do recommend AMAC.

I belonged to AARP for 10 years and left them because they went from being an organization designed to help retirees to one concerned with political issues that often had no relationship to retirement and one more concerned with selling insurance than meeting the needs of their members. They did send entirely too much solicitation mail as well.

I recently joined another organization that has helping out retired people at heart.

I agree with everything that has been said already about AARP. I joined and left after their political agenda became radicalized and their junk mail engine went into overdrive. I am unfamiliar with AMAC, but a quick look at their web site makes me think it is too conservative for me -- a moderate.

I am represented by MOAA - Military Officers Association of America, formerly TROA - The Retired Officers Association. Membership in MOAA is open to all active duty and retired military officers.

There are similar organizations for retired enlisted personnel such as the Fleet Reserve for Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard retirees.

I belong to AARP for just one reason. Discount at motels when I travel.

The junk mail I burn ..... makes great starter fuel for my evening fires with friends.

I glance through their mags when I have the time and when I don't, I pitch them.

Does AMAC offer discounts at motels?

Yep... national travel discounts for lodging & rental cars.
