Back in 2007 or 2008 I made some trades with a few Aussies. I was going through my blanks and found a purple blank with some light yellow sap wood. The only purple wood I know of is Purpleheart. I've turned it. And while it is pretty hard, this stuff is HARD! I blew it up drilling it even. I didn't realize that it got hot.

Anyway, it was marked Acacia Canei (at least I think that is what the last word was). But man is it purple! What do I have?

Sam, I salvaged the blank and will be turning it soon. I'll post some before pics here, and the after photos in SOYP. It actually wasn't one blank, but two shorties so the grain won't match up, but that is not such a big deal. The blanks were very rough sawn, but from what I can tell, may have some very interesting figure.

I wish I could remember who I got them from. It would make it easier.

Hi Billy,

Just chanced on your post. If you got a stick of Carneii then you lucked out big time. It has two or three names but is an Australian Icon timber classified as rare and commonly called Aussie Purpleheart, unlike the Purpleheart elsewhere it never loses its beaut colour.
After a quick rummage through my old pics here is one using that timber I do play around with shapes.

It is hard as nearly best to treat it drilling much as Ebony however much easier than Ebony to drill and turn, the timber is found in defined areas, property owners are extremely sensitive to their trees.

Hope this helps another name is Waddy Wood.

Kind regards Sam as well. Peter.

PS Will get back with the pic in a while got a Skype call going.

Back again Pic of Carneii.

Billy did you ever swap with Penpal, Peter Hay? I know he has some of that stuff.

Sam, it is indeed possible. Peter was already a member then, so it could have been him. I wish I could remember.

Anyway, as promised, here are the before pics. They will soon appear as a Jr Gent.
