I got one for the shopsmith but never used it. Could I put this in the headstock and turn between the 60 degree center and this oliminating the bushings? It will be only for pen blanks.

Mike; It likely isn't a 60 degree point, and the spurs present a hazard both to the tool and your fingers! OUCH!

You could check the angle with a "fish tail" threading gauge like this one.

I'm not sure how you would be able to do this with existing parts. Most dead centers have a machined taper to fit whatever taper the lathe has. BUT the SS doesn't have a taper on the headstock. A dead center would be easy to make on a metal lathe. It could mount directly on the quill. A custom job would be too expensive to be affordable.

Dead centers are not normally hardened because they are intended to mounted and then machined off on the lathe when mounted for the ultimate in accuracy. Some modern centers have carbide tips so they can't be machined on the lathe.

It would work to round the blanks, but you would still have about 1/8 to 1/4 inch square on the spur end, Best is a 60 degree dead center,

This is the 60 degree dead center that I was talking about. The spur center will mount on the quill feed side.

Mike; the live center on the left is a 60 degree center. I checked the drive spur for my SS with a thread gauge and the drive spur is NOT 60 degrees..

Sorry...

Thanks. Would I be able to use the picture on the left mounted on the quill feed (were the saw blade would mount on the shopsmith) then have the 60 degree center on the tailstock? It has a taper to fit in the tailstock.
