Quality Sandpaper source?

I am looking for a source of QUALITY sheet sandpaper in 400, 600, 800 and 1000 grit. AND in general I would prefer white / LIGHT gray colored sandpaper.

(I am now in unfamiliar territory! While in Japan, I had several sources of good sandpaper of different grits, but here I can't find what I need locally or in Memphis.)

I have had problems with dark gray or blackish backed SP in which the background colors of the SP would also smear onto holly and other light colored woods. For this reason, I usually stay away from dark colored SP. I recently purchased some at an auto store close by and ran into this problem that I had in Japan.

What is your brand and source of Quality SP in the 400 - 1000 grit range?

( I am not looking for MM. I have MM and use it, but I always use SP sheets cut down for "shaping" my blanks, and also for the first use after the build up and coating of CA. Soft cloth and foam backed MM conforms to the shape too much. Paper and stiff cloth SP cuts the ridges down and helps form the shape that is hard to do with MM and other soft backed SP.)

There was a test published within the past year (I think) in Wood Magazine.

Their results found Klingspor was the "best", based on the test. I will see if I can find the exact issue, etc.

Edit in: After searching "Wood" magazine, they don't list it. I will look later this week for the article in my filed mags.

Bill Needow did an amazing review of sandpaper a while back. Abranet is really great stuff, Amazon to Woodcraft carries it... available in sheet or disc.

Just google "Mirka sandpaper sheets" and you'll find hundreds of vendors selling it directly for about half the price of buying it locally.

I get much better results with Mirka than Norton , 3M and the others.
 
You might try Supergrit (Gettysburg., Pa)Products - Sheets - Brown Red AO - Supergrit It is a small operation, and has lots of sales and close outs.

They carry Rhynogrit paper, by Indasa Abrasives. The paper is a dark red in color but in my experience it does not bleed or transfer the color. Super stuff, about $.50 per sheet, and grits up to about 2500. It seems to last forever - I use the 400 and 600 for my wet sanding before switching to micromesh.
 
I had same problem with wet/dry sandpaper from auto/supply & body shop paer here in town. When use it up will buy some SC from Klingspor. Did buy 10 meter or yard (800 thru 2,000) Klingspor rolls several years ago from Hut. Cannot find at Woodworking Shop but believe Hut still carries them.


Sanding roll varity pack item # 1130," ( 800,1200,1500,& 2,000 grits) for $16 + whaterver shipping cost. Also bought other variety pack and did not care for the 240 & 320 grits but everything else okay.

The best current -- ceramic grit -- Norton Dry Ice. Goes to 400 Consistent grit size and great durability -- (This is not the same as Norton Black Ice -- )


Above 400 I use Norton A 275, (almost as good as dry ice)


General use -- I stay with premium sanding mediums because it only takes a few pieces of wrong sized grit to create lots of work.

You guys are GREAT! I am going to try some of several different brands that were mentioned here and compare them over time. And thank you also to those that named specific types within a brand. That will be most helpful!
