Not exactly in a good way, though.

I was grousing about needing to take a file to the toolrest on my Turncrafter again this evening, and the fact that they could have finished it better by dragging it along the sidewalk. (note to China: flycutters require much slower feedrates than you're using) Well, it solved that when I had a skew catch right out at the edge of the rest. The top snapped off, flipped over pinged off the chuck body (no damage to the body) took a ride on the jaws (cosmetic dings only on the jaws) and then thunked me across the palm, just hard enough to make me really never want to use a cheap toolrest again.

The most annoying part is that I know nothing can get shipped here reliably before Christmas, and my work schedule will be rather miserable for a few days after.

On the plus side, I won't have to deal with that again, though I would have preferred a smooth, planned transition. Now I'm faced with the decision between rherrell and johnnycnc for the replacement.

Well, at least your expected replacement will be the best - no matter which of those two choices you decide on.

Hope your hand didn't get too messed up!

That's a sad but kind of funny story, Joe.
Whatcha need? something like a 5/8" post, with 3/4" round top rest?
I got a couple left over from my last run, none in stock on my site.
I'm working up a slick new design, so the old ones are going to be history for me.
I'ts close to Christmas.. send me your address with how tall the assembled thing can be
and I'll get you one there before Christmas, if USPS Priority does it's part.

Well, it certainly can't be much worse. If they'd at least put a rounded edge on it, it might have held a smooth surface for more than a few turnings. I keep thinking I'll get something whipped up at work (I work security at a shop that could easily make one if they hadn't laid off most of the guys who could run a manual lathe.) but I never seem to get around to it.

Fortunately, I knew right away that something had come loose, so I let go of the skew with my left hand and started to step back, thinking the workpiece had come out of the chuck. That at least had my palm in line for the hit, with just enough of a smack to tingle for a bit. If it had hit the back of my fingers that hard, I might not be typing very well for a while :frown:

If it involves one of my projects, it's usually funny. As long as it doesn't involve the first aid kit, it's not sad compared to some of them.

Will the new rest be compatible with the current post? I'm thinking about getting two or three rest lengths, though I may just get multiple posts as well to save time switching.

Not much sense rushing; even if you had it in the mail first thing Monday it wouldn't make it here until I start the 12-on-12-off shifts that won't leave me much time to do anything outside work. Your unexpected move to the top of my "people I need to order stuff from" list means that now I have to dig through your site and figure out what else I need.

My new system will not be reverse compatible with the current model,
unless I come up with an adapter, but it's really not practical.
I do have extra top rest bars, too, up to 8" long. so if you figure out what you want, you can get the whole package at the current style.
I'll take good care of you on whatever you need.
let me know!

Well, gee, now I'm curious to see just what "quality upgrades" a toolrest with a broad, smooth surface, presumably made from an appropriate grade of steel can get that would cause me to be "blown away." Probably not quite curious enough to cobble something together to hold me over until they're available, but still...

Judging from the folks on here that are using your products, I have no doubts about that. High budget marketing has nothing on unbiased, unsolicited testimonials.

The new tool rest will be identical in function, yet improved in 3 seperate aspects. I can't let the cat outta the bag now.
When it is released, it will be obvious.
It is a pretty good undertaking with added manufacturing steps, so I can't bust just one out and be price effective.
I will cut you a nice deal on the current model, since it is on it's way out.
And there is nothing wrong with the current model,
I just like to innovate and bring better ideas to the table.
Thanks!

I'll probably send you a PM sometime over the holiday about that, since I'll likely have a lot of downtime at work to get my "to be bought" lists in order. If by some chance I decide to get in a hurry, I'll just borrow a welder and stick something together to get me by.

In the meantime, any chance of a bushing set for the Trimline/Saturn? Looks like .330 for the tip, .350 at the top, and something in the neighborhood of .445 for the centerband. 7mm tube.

Ah, so all the cool new accessories will only work with the new iRest?

Well, I hacked something together Monday to get me by. Turned the heads off a 5/8 and a 3/4" bolt, cut the threaded end off the 3/4, turned the threads off the 5/8, cut the resulting tenon to 1/2" long, and drilled the 3/4 for a press fit on the tenon. Should've drilled deeper though: I have to tap it back together about every 20 minutes of turning.

It's better than nothing, but my money's on the way to johnnycnc for a real solution

Got the johnnycnc rest in Thursday, and I have to say that I should have ordered it when I ordered the lathe. It's rock solid, and the short bar is perfect for tops and other small objects, while the 6" one makes for much easier work on long spindles. Best of all, it's smooth enough that even the sharp-cornered skew (yes, I know I should ease the corners of the shank a bit, but I keep putting it off) glides right along steadily. Big improvement over the factory rest.
