I just got my PSI mandrel and I thought it would tap the wood also. So do I need to get a tap also or will it thread wood/acrylic?

It will "kinda" thread into wood, but PR and acrylic needs to be tapped. 5/16th drill bit and 3/8 x 16 tpi tap.

I don't tap the blanks, just screw them onto the mandrel... I think I do use a drill bit just a hair larger than the directions call for... and I have had difficulties getting some of the finished turnings off the mandrel... not often though.

threads are either 1/4 by 20 or 3/8 by 16 -- Andy -- had to correct your cross over on thread count. Most are the 3/8 thread

I like the Ruth Niles setup as she machines the mandrel to be able to cut threads and sells one of the better stopper designs

Thanks, Ken! I have two "screw" mandrels. You are exactly correct! The BS mandrel is, in fact, 3/8 x16.

The bolt that I insert from the rear of my Beall collett chuck is the 20 tpi. I think I'm getting "old-timers" disease. I can't remember what I use for what. My 3/8 x 20 "bolt" is what I use for shaving brushes because I can let the blank "stick out" more.

Thanks for the catch!

A little bit of paste wax either on the mandrel threads or inside the blank hole will make it easier to get the finshed stopper off. Just be careful not to get any on surfaces you'll be applying a finish to. Also, be aware that the Ruth Niles stoppers are smaller in diameter than PSI's mandrel. If you want a flush fit, you'll have to switch mandrels or get creative.

Regards,
Eric
